Recommended Booklist

 

There are many books currently available on the Craft and Paganism. It is useful to read as many as possible, both good and bad, in order to obtain a perspective on the Craft as a whole and where the Roebuck Tradition fits within it. The following list provides a sample of the ones that will help the student better understand our tradition.

***The Forge of Tubal Cain

Covers the history of the Roebuck for over 30 years, Ann writes about the Southern California Pagan community from personal experience. She included an account of the Roebuck training, including rituals, exercises and pathworkings. This is the book that is essential to understanding our tradition.

    Valiente, Doreen and Jones, Evan J.

    **WITCHCRAFT: A TRADITION RENEWED

    Evan John Jones, who actually wrote this book, was the original contact for the Roebuck in England in 1982. In this work, he outlines the elements of a tradition similar to the one he taught to the members of the Roebuck.


    Gray, William

    WESTERN INNER WORKINGS

    This is the first volume of the Sangreal Sodality Series which deals with the Western tradition and the idea of the Sacred King and the quest for the Holy Grail. Gray also knew Cochrane and the chapter 'Paganistic Principles' is based on their extensive correspondence.

    Originally titled "The Rollright Ritual," this book describes a very effective method for reconstructing the rituals originally held in ancient stone circles.


    Graves, Robert

    *THE WHITE GODDESS

    Graves has compiled a complete language of Pagan symbolism, lore and practices which has been heavily used over the last forty years in reconstructing many Pagan traditions. The book is difficult to read, but it is absolutely essential in understanding our tradition.

    *CELTIC MYTH AND LEGEND

    A thorough introduction to Irish, Welsh and Gaulish mythology. For those not already familiar with Celtic myth, this book is a good preparation for reading THE WHITE GODDESS.

    **The Roebuck in the Thicked

    An Anthology of articles by Robert Cochrane and Evan John Jones and a history of the Clan of Tubal Cain in the UK.We highly recommended it.

    An important book in the development of the Roebuck pantheon of goddesses and an interesting analysis of the feminine mysteries as they are found in Celtic myths, legends and culture.

    PRACTICAL MAGIC IN THE NORTHERN TRADITION

    This scholarly but very readable work outlines the elements of the magical traditions, customs and practices of all the ancient peoples of Northern Europe, including Celtic, Norse and Anglo-Saxon.

    CELTIC MYSTERIES: THE ANCIENT RELIGION

    This little book outlines most of the important facets of ancient Celtic religious beliefs, both in detailed description and exquisite pictures.
